The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
